Hannah Elaine Stone, BSN
Elaine was going around repositioning patients to help prevent wounds. When she went into one of the rooms to reposition the patient, the patient told her she was not feeling well and was unable to do things she normally could. Elaine did a quick neuro check and noticed some abnormalities, so she promptly reached out to the physician and the primary nurse.
They were able to get the patient down to get a head CT. The patient was in the time frame and was able to receive Tenecteplase. Due to Elaine's quick thinking and ability to be able to use the skills she had learned, she was able to help minimize the damage of the stroke.
Elaine is truly an amazing nurse, and although her group of patients was keeping her pretty busy today, she did not let that steer her from caring for this patient and getting them the help they needed.

Elaine was rounding on the unit, turning patients at her scheduled time. When she entered a room, she was visiting with the patient who was on the phone, and the patient told her that her family was worried about her. Elaine took the time to understand why the family was worried and learned that there was a concern that the patient was developing stroke- like symptoms.
The patient told Elaine about what was wrong and how she was feeling. She told Elaine she couldn't find the right words and that she thought she was following her finger, when in reality, her eyes were not moving at all. Elaine quickly reached out to the primary nurse and attending physician to help this patient.
The primary nurse and the charge nurse went in and assessed the patient, spoke with the attending provider, and consulted the rapid response nurse. The decision was made to do a stat CT head, which turned into a stroke alert, and eventually the patient was transferred to ICU for TNK.
The patient is now back on the floor; her speech is clear, and she has no residual effects. Every day the patient tells her caregivers for the day all about that sweet little nurse that listened to her and knew something was wrong.
