Whether it's one interaction or several, it's the little things in life that people need to lift their spirits in times like this, and she definitely did that for our family.
I first met her working on 6 Main. She not only took exceptional care of my dad on that day, but exceptional emotional care of me. She was very attentive and caring in every aspect of his care. Simple things like touching his arm as she explained what she was going to do and holding his hand as she spoke to him. This special nurse was not assigned to my father when Monday came around but continued to make time for a visit with him. I stepped out to make a phone call, and when I came back to his room, she was sitting on his bed talking to him. This made me believe in compassion and that some people are put on this earth to take care of others, and that they love doing it. The next night was a difficult night for my dad. She saw me standing in the hallway and came over to me and asked me how I was doing. I broke down crying. You could tell in her eyes, her voice, and her body language that she truly cared. That's all people need sometimes. We know reality and all we need sometimes are kind words. The following night, again, she did not have him as one of her patients. She came over and spoke to my son and me with compassion. I asked her if putting my dad in a wheelchair and taking him for a stroll around the hospital would be okay, and explained when he was home, I would take him for walks outside. "Absolutely," she said without hesitation. In a matter of 5 minutes, she was back with a wheelchair, getting him up and comfortable so we could get him some new scenery. He enjoyed it so much. He was able to spend time in the lobby listening to music with me and his grandchildren. It was a very memorable moment we will never forget, and she made it happen. Whether it's one interaction or several, it's the little things in life that people need to lift their spirits in times like this, and she definitely did that for our family. My dad unfortunately passed, but hours prior to letting him go, she expressed how sorry she was, and a hug was in order. I thank this truly amazing, special nurse from the bottom of my heart.
