I was asked to step into a patient's room to speak with them. Upon entering the room, the patient stated two simple words, "Comfort and Rest." As he spoke to me, he praised the staff here in PCU and deemed one particular nurse his "Guardian Angel." Hannah Lacy was the nurse who took care of him on the previous two nights. These nights were particularly rough for J for many reasons. Already neutropenic and going through chemo treatments, J simply needed "comfort and rest." He went on to explain how Hannah spent hours in his room trying to resolve some of the issues that were plaguing him. In the end, she achieved success, which allowed J the comfortability and peace of mind to rest his tired eyes finally. J also told me that in previous conversations with Hannah, they spoke of some of the things he enjoyed. As nurses, we all know it's the small things that matter most. She remembered his preferred drink was Sunkist soda and didn't think twice about stopping to grab one for him on her way to work. Something as small as a Sunkist soda can mean the world to someone going through the toughest time of their life.

Hannah is well known in our unit for having a kind and compassionate personality but, above all, an extraordinary patient advocate. She continues to be a light in dark times for our patients and their families. Hearing interactions like this is nothing short of inspiring. We work long, stressful hours here at PCU, and I'm proud to work alongside nurses like Hannah.
