Hannah has made E believe she can do hard things (take meds, get out of bed, walk the hall), holding those boundaries firm and speaking in the MOST encouraging, empathetic way.
Hannah has been my 13-year-old daughter's nurse for 3 day shifts. My girl has IBD and had surgery and now has an ileostomy. As you can imagine, these have been such emotionally and physically fragile days for her. Hannah's skills are only matched by her tender spirit. She carries a confidence and maturity that are well beyond her year and a half of experience here. In the past months, both inpatient for 4 weeks and outpatient in clinic setting, it would be safe to say we've encountered 100+ nurses. They have each one been excellent, 5 star excellent. This, however, is the first time I've been prompted to write a DAISY nomination. There is something very special about this Hannah! Post-surgery was rougher than we expected, and Hannah has made E believe she can do hard things (take meds, get out of bed, walk the hall), holding those boundaries firm and speaking in the MOST encouraging, empathetic way. I've overheard Hannah teaching nursing students, and she is just as patient and positive and articulate with them as she is with me and my daughter. A month or so ago, my daughter told me she "just figured out that the older nurses (read: experienced) nurses are more confident and that makes me feel safe." I'm here to tell you that this young Hannah does the same thing for her, and me too! You hold on to this one, Vandy! And I will try to refrain from scheduling our next surgery around Hannah's schedule, but don't count on it!
