March 2026 Honoree
Hannah McGrew, RN
My wife was scheduled for a four-hour surgery and procedure. The first nurse she met that morning was Jen. She set the tone with her warm welcome to the Surgical Services Unit. Jen explained that my wife would start pre-op and that I would be invited back to her room when she was ready.
When I was invited back, my wife was prepped for her surgery and procedure. Jen displayed a genuineness in dealing with us, especially answering all my questions, showing a level of empathy and compassion that we have not experienced before, in preparing ourselves for my wonderful wife’s potentially serious surgery/procedure. Not only was this surgery stressful for my wife, but it was also stressful for me waiting those hours until the doctor notified me that everything went great with my wife's surgery. It felt tremendous that I could breathe normally again.
Almost five hours later, I was invited back to the recovery bay in the PACU. Hannah walked me back to the bay to see my wife, who was still experiencing the aftereffects of the surgery and procedure. It’s difficult to state in words how relieved I was to see my wife of almost 52 years. Hannah was a welcoming presence in explaining medications and post-operative procedures. She left “no stone unturned” in assuaging all our concerns.
Besides their attributes of outstanding job performance and professionalism, they displayed the patience of Job and the wisdom of Solomon. Both Jen and Hannah showed passion, unconditional commitment, and dedicated service that made a meaningful difference in the care of my wife.
