And then, in the middle of all of her pain, she would yell, “Hannah, where are you….” and Hannah would come running in.
My 84-year-old mother-in-law has been in the hospital for about a week. It started with a pretty standard orthopedic back surgery but quickly changed to an intestinal issue with major pain, causing screaming, crying, and wishing that she would die. Although medication was ordered, Hannah went way above and beyond to ensure M could be as comfortable as she could while the team was trying to diagnose what was going on. She would hold my mother-in-law‘s hand while talking to her and praying with her. She calmly talked her through the medications and what would happen next.
Even on nights that she wasn’t M’s RN, M would yell, “Help me! Help me, please, Jesus!” And then, in the middle of all of her pain, she would yell, “Hannah, where are you….” and Hannah would come running in. She always respected and worked with the nurse assigned to my MIL but never let her dangle (which sometimes would happen if Hannah didn’t step in.) Even the charge nurse would call on Hannah to help as she could see the special connection formed. The medication sent my MIL into delusional episodes; Hannah was right there, comforting her and bringing her back to reality. Hannah would call the doctor to get faster results on things needed to help comfort her. If we could adopt a 23-year-old, we definitely would bring Hannah into our family. She has brought more comfort and calmness to our whole family than you can ever imagine. She is a real, down-to-earth, caring person who happens to be a nurse. She’s our angel while trying to figure out what is going on medically.
