Hannah
Peacock
I want to thank this nursing student for being exceptional in the care she provides for her patients. Hannah has demonstrated multiple instances of exceptional care, making her highly deserving of the DAISY Award for nursing students.
Hannah provided care to a patient who had fallen from a ladder while attempting to paint the interior of her house. The patient had not waited for family members to arrive to help her. During her capstone rotation in the emergency department, Hannah worked closely with her preceptor to ensure the patient's physiological stability. However, she quickly identified that the patient's psychological state was the most pressing concern.
After ensuring her other patients were stable and comfortable, Hannah intentionally took the time to implement therapeutic communication techniques. She sat at eye level with the patient, letting her know she was there for her. Hannah patiently listened as the patient shared that she had not waited for help because she simply wanted a change. The patient broke down in tears, explaining, "I just wanted a change." Hannah, sensing the deeper emotional need, moved her chair closer, handed the patient a Kleenex to wipe away her tears, and, with permission, held her hand.
The patient tearfully confided that she couldn't wait any longer for a change, as she had just lost her husband in December last year and wanted some color in her life. Hannah, recognizing the importance of emotional support, allowed the patient to share her struggles and took the time to assess her support system and community resources. The patient mentioned she was a Baptist and had a church community to help her navigate her grief. In response, Hannah offered to pray with her, and the patient, feeling comforted, agreed. They prayed together, and the patient expressed that she felt better afterward.
It was truly remarkable to hear how Hannah applied what she had learned throughout nursing school. She not only helped stabilize the patient physically but also recognized the psychological factors that may have contributed to the injury. Her compassionate response to the patient's emotional needs, particularly in the fast-paced environment of the emergency department, exemplified her dedication to holistic care. She ensured her other patients remained stable and comfortable while also providing meaningful support to a patient in emotional distress. Hannah's deep concern for the patient's suffering and her willingness to take action in such a challenging setting truly set her apart as an exceptional nursing student.
