Hannah called UPS, got to the truck driver, and made him return from his route to deliver the medications safely by the evening. The entire process took all day.
I started at Lahey a couple of months ago as the new Director of the Pulmonary Hypertension Center. I don't know the inpatient team of nurses well. However, I started to work with them side by side, and I would like to draw your attention to the wonderful nurses on 5W. In particular, I would like to praise Hannah Putney, RN, and her dedication to our patients, her willingness and eagerness to go beyond her role as a charge nurse, her ability to think outside the box, take matters into her own hands, and solve a very difficult situation. Please allow me to give you details of the events that occurred over the past weekend.
We had a pulmonary hypertension patient with end-stage, severe disease. He was to be discharged on hospice beginning of this week. In order to ensure his cardiovascular stability to get him home safely, we needed to start him on 2 medications that were supposed to be delivered by the CVS specialty pharmacy on Saturday morning. We learned by mid-day, after Hannah made numerous phone calls to CVS specialty pharmacy (closed over the weekend!), that UPS came, found the pulmonary clinic closed (there was a wrong address of the shipment, instead of the nurses' station, to the pulmonary clinic). The delivery person left with the medication. CVS stated that they can re-deliver by Monday afternoon, which was going to be too late for this patient's discharge. Hannah called UPS, got to the truck driver, and made him return from his route to deliver the medications safely by the evening. The entire process took all day.
The patient was started on the medication over the weekend; he was stable and was discharged to home today. Family and the patient were very appreciative of the work 5W and especially Hannah put into this to ensure a smooth, safe, and pleasant discharge to home. She more than deserves our recognition.
