June 2026 Honoree
Hannah Scharp, RN, BSN
Compassion. Compassion is something we all need when faced with our biggest fears.
There is no greater fear than that of a parent losing a child. As a parent who has experienced loss of this magnitude, when you are faced with your own mortality in that instant, you go from expecting and all the hopes and dreams that come with it to quite the opposite. In that moment, there is nothing anyone can say that can take that pain away.
As a mother, there is comfort in knowing your loss, no matter how big or small, is still impactful to others. No parent should ever have to bury or say goodbye to their child. There is such comfort, though with no words.
In that moment, I watched you grieve with your patient the loss of their baby. In that moment I watched you comfort your patient without words. In that moment I watched you be present and grieve your patient's loss with them, their hopes, and dreams. It takes incredible strength to remain strong for others; strength, like so many things, can look very different for each and every one of us. You are by far one of the strongest and most compassionate people I have ever met, and I hope that never changes.
