As a mom, you never want your child to be sick, no matter how old they are. Our job is to protect them from anything that may harm them, but in the event that we cannot prevent this from happening, having the well cared for in a hospital like Englewood is comforting. From the moment we entered the emergency room to the time we went to the floor, we both received exceptional care from all the staff. There were two wonderful nurses that stood out the most during our stay. Both nurses are equally deserving of this award, making it impossible to just nominate one without the other, as they complement each other well in providing excellent nursing care.
The first nurse, Amelia Henderson is a night nurse on pediatrics, who has true southern hospitality about her. Her caring nature puts you at ease from the moment you meet her. She was extremely professional, kind, and caring. She spoke in a manner that not only made you feel at ease that you were in good hands but also was thorough in her assessment skills. At the beginning of her shift, she would come in with the PCA and perform a thorough assessment, answered all of my son's questions, and made sure that we had everything that we needed before she left the room. She kept all promises that she made and followed up on these in a timely manner.
Amelia always came into the room with a smile on her face and knowledge of what was taking place in the care of my son. She checked on both of us frequently. Even though she worked the night shift and tiptoed into the room, many times I did hear her, and she would say, "Everything is okay, get some sleep, I am just checking on you." This provided me with comfort knowing that he was in her care. Before she would leave in the morning, she would be sure to stop by and let us know that she would be going home for the night but would be back the next day and would check on us, even if he wasn't her patient.
Hannah Schenker works per-diem on the day shift. Hannah is a caring nurse, who was also extremely thorough in her assessment skills. You can tell that she's a mother herself, as she was very compassionate, and made sure that she not only asked me questions but also directed a lot of the questions directly to my son. She spoke to him to find out some of his interests so that she can build a connection with him that was more than a care provider who walked in and out of his room. Since my son had no appetite during and leading up to his stay, Hannah, along with the dietary staff did their best to try and find him something that would interest him in eating.
In our 6 days at the hospital, we received excellent care from many nurses but felt that these two nurses not only provided exceptional care but also represent the nursing profession as positive role models. Both nurses went above and beyond to provide care for both of us (the patient and family). We are forever grateful for everything that they have done for us. My son is especially grateful to both of these nurses for their due diligence in facilitating his speedy recovery.
