The story begins with my day nurse, Hannah. I remember her most because she took great care of me and made me smile and laugh, which was not an easy task when I was in my condition.
I got food poisoning, I didn’t feel well for two days, and then Friday at 1:00 AM, I knew I had to get to the hospital. I found out later that if I had not gone in, I would not have lived until morning. I was in bad shape. I have a lot of ins and outs in my memory of those days in IMCU.

The story begins with my day nurse, Hannah. I remember her most because she took great care of me and made me smile and laugh, which was not an easy task when I was in my condition. The night shift nurse, H, was also good. I was awake during the day, so I remembered Hannah, as I would call her more often.

I remember one day they were changing shifts, and Hannah said to me, “Now R, you be good to H and don’t give her a bad time.” I thought and smiled to myself, “Yes, dear, and what exactly am I going to do with all these IVs and wires hooked to me, LOL?” She cared!

One other day, I got to moving around too much and set off an alarm, which triggered my A-Fib. Well, here comes Hannah running: “Well, R, now look what you did. Now we need to get you some meds for your heart.” It’s the way she said it that made me smile. Like scolding a child, LOL, she cared.
I truly believe her actions gave me a will to live.

My brother had a 2-hour drive from VA. To see me, he came often. I still remember him saying one day, he came into my room, and both nurses were there, and it looked like a couple of angels looking over me. They were. He said if one had to do something, they made sure the other didn’t leave my side. That was probably when my heart was acting up from the poison. It was comforting knowing someone was watching over me because I was in bad shape.

My brother told me after I was recovering that a doctor had told him that when he came back the next day, he might want to have my affairs in order, that I might not make it. I am sure that was a long 2-hour drive home.

The next day, he came back not knowing what to expect. He walked into my room, and I was sitting up in bed, smiling and eating. There, he said, "Hannah was your angel right by your side." He was so happy; he also knew a miracle had happened. Deep down in my heart, I truly believe this special young woman gave me the will to live. She will never be forgotten, along with H and all the other staff at this hospital.

Thank you all for giving me another chance. I have fully recovered, and now it’s time to say Thanks.
