Recently, we admitted a patient on the floor who was nearing the end of his time on Earth. His wife was at home due to her own health struggles, and their wedding anniversary was quickly approaching. The family was determined to bring the wife up to the hospital so they could celebrate their anniversary for what would be their last time together. Working together with Case Management and other nursing staff members, the patient’s nurse assisted in making this visit special for the patient, his wife, and his family. Balloons and a signed card from staff were given to them, along with celebratory visits from several staff members working that day. Sadly, the patient did pass away, but the family was so appreciative of the extra kindness, care, and compassion given by the nurse. Even though their situation was grim, the nurse’s contribution to being the difference helped shine a light during a very difficult time.
