All of this sounds normal for a nurse but it’s the way Hannah took care of me in this situation that was amazing.
When I was admitted to the hospital I had been waiting in the ER for a while because there were so many patients. I was here for kidney pain and lots of it. 10/10!

Once I got into a room in the ER things went quickly and I was admitted right away and had a bed waiting for me. Since that happened quickly my pain wasn’t under control yet. The shift change happened not too long after I got into my room and that’s when I met Hannah, my night nurse. As soon as Hannah saw me, she stopped what she was doing immediately. She messaged the next doctor and asked him to come see me as soon as he can and was also able to get a dose of pain meds while we waited. All of this sounds normal for a nurse but it’s the way Hannah took care of me in this situation that was amazing.

She took the time to listen and she understood why I was so upset and didn’t disregard my emotions or my pain. During the midst of the first two hours in my room, my young children were at home calling me and crying over the phone wanting me to be home with them and wanting me to cook dinner, which added to the stress that was already going on. Hannah showed me compassion and professionalism from the moment she came into my room. She took charge and took care of me in so many ways. Hannah went above and beyond her nursing duties. She checked on me several times once my pain did get under control to make sure it didn’t become too much again. She went and found heat packs for my kidneys until she could get pain meds for me (which worked miracles for my pain).

Hannah also noticed that I was already scheduled for surgery first thing in the morning. So once she was able to get my nausea under control she made sure that I had something to eat and plenty to drink before my NPO went into effect at midnight. This was after the kitchen was closed. Along with her comforting me and taking care of all my medical needs she also took care of my need for a phone charger. My phone was dying and my kids kept calling. What was I going to do without my charger? But my superhero nurse Hannah was there once more with her personal charger. Thank goodness for Hannah!
