Hans called management, the patient's psychiatrist, clinical logistics, the house supervisor, numerous calls with the NICU CTL, public safety, and the patient's guardian.
This nurse went above and beyond to advocate and fulfill a difficult patient request. We had a patient hospitalized on the BHU, who had a family member in critical condition in the NICU. Typically, our patients do not get to leave our locked unit, but this was an extenuating circumstance. Our patient requested to see this family member to say goodbye. Hans coordinated this request. He called management, the patient's psychiatrist, clinical logistics, the house supervisor, numerous calls with the NICU CTL, public safety, and the patient's guardian. He remained calm and professional to complete this request. He discussed and educated our patient on various medical equipment the patient would see in the NICU (tubes, lines, machines) and prepared the patient for the specific time frame that this visit would take place. This was requested and arranged at the end of day shift and Hans stayed over to make sure everything went smooth and escorted this patient to the NICU and back to the BHU without incident. It doesn’t matter if it’s at the end of his shift, Hans is dedicated to providing outstanding care to his patients. The BHU is lucky to have such an amazing nurse on our team!
