One of the greatest things a nurse can do is truly connect with a patient and their family. No time is more important than at the end of life. It is a moment of great intimacy and trust when a life is drawing to a close, especially one that has been lived well. There is so much joy and reason to celebrate. Harley identified such a time for a patient who had been placed on comfort care. The patient was a beloved member of the Cottonwood community, and her wish was to see those she loved one last time. Harley reached out to leadership to secure a room, and arrangements were made for her to take the patient to a conference room the next morning to celebrate her life with those she held dear. Almost 50 people showed up to honor our patient and shower her with love and memories. She was enveloped in this love as she passed away less than two days later. Harley shared that it was the greatest nursing experience of her life. None of this would have happened without Harley's kind heart and willingness to make it happen. My husband and I were in Cottonwood that same weekend, in a shop where I overheard people talking about this event. It meant so much to those whose love and loss were honored by Harley and the VVMC team.
