Our DAISY Award winner is Haya Refai. Haya took care of my brother. He came in for paracentesis but ended up being admitted. Sadly he passed away suddenly during his stay. It was such a shock and a loss for me. He was my only sibling, and I miss him terribly. I reread his texts to me all the time, and I found several messages telling me about his sweet nurse Haya. Here are a few: Sweet Haya is running to get me a Starbucks since I’m not allowed to leave the floor. I got my Flat White! I told her that not getting my Starbucks was the low point of my day. So she is trying to get one for me. I cannot thank you enough for taking the extra time to make him feel special and cared for. I hate that I didn’t get to see him; I hate that I wasn’t there. I hate the time that Covid took from everyone. But I am forever grateful for the kindness that you showed to him. Tomorrow is his birthday; he would have been 55 years old. To honor the day, I wanted to do something special as a thank you for being there for him when I couldn’t be. With all my gratitude and from the bottom of my heart, I thank you and nominate you for the DAISY Award.
