I had a patient who is in his early 30s with a diagnosis of Osteogenesis Imperfecta. Even though the CRNA had given him pain medicine, he arrived in severe pain. After checking him in and giving him more pain medicine, I started talking to him to try to get his mind away from the pain. He was upset due to his diagnosis. He stated that since he was a little boy, he has had to deal with so much, including teasing from his peers since he couldn't do all of the things that they could do. He was saying he was so tired of the pain. He also stated that he would never hurt himself intentionally, but he wished that someone else had to deal with the pain he dealt with daily. He also stated that he has seen many of his friends pass, and that they were so much better than him. I told him that he was here on this earth for a purpose. That even though he had to deal with this disease, he still had important things to do in this life. His life is worth something. He began tearing up and told me thank you. Thank you for being so nice. I actually made him smile through his pain.
