Heather immediately saw that I was not ecstatic about this induction and validated my feelings while offering bountiful support to ease my mind and heart about this process I had to endure.
During my first pregnancy, I developed preeclampsia and had to be induced it was a very traumatic experience so much so that I considered not having any more children after my first. Needless to say, from the moment I found out I was pregnant this time, I spent my whole pregnancy trying everything to avoid having to be induced. Unfortunately, towards the end of my pregnancy, I developed preeclampsia yet again and had to come in to be induced, and I was heartbroken/ terrified by this.
When I walked through L&D doors, I was greeted by Heather with a warm smile and delightful conversation as she helped me get settled in my room and even made my partner and me laugh. Heather immediately saw that I was not ecstatic about this induction and validated my feelings while offering bountiful support to ease my mind and heart about this process I had to endure. She consistently reminded me that she was here for anything I needed and that I did not need to keep apologizing for needing her as my only job was to be in labor with my baby and I was doing a great job, and she was here to help me with whatever I need to do my job. Heather made me feel seen as a person and not just another patient on her rotation. This is a rare gem to find in healthcare right now.
She took the time to make sure I was comfortable mentally and physically. Heather went over my birth plan with me and helped me understand what possible paths we could try for me to have the most pleasant induction experience, and when it came time for more decisions to be made, she advocated for me by helping communicate and verify what we had discussed previously is still what I wanted or not. Heather made me feel safe, comfortable, confident, and like I was in complete control of my induction and birth, all while training a new staff at the same time.
I ended up having the most beautiful, empowering birth experience of my life, and I don't think it would have been possible without the wonderful support and care I received from Heather during my stay in Labor and Delivery. The world needs more nurses like Heather, who are compassionate, empathetic, genuine, well-educated, and who make each patient feel seen and supported.
