My 84-year-old father was a patient for two days. He was admitted for altered mental status. That was really an understatement. I spent the first day with him. The nurses were absolute angels and knew exactly how to handle my dad. When I say, "he was out there," he was over the top. He pulled his IV out twice. He jumped up, jerked his gown off and was standing in a blue chair before I knew what was happening. The same man was labeled "fall risk found a surge of energy. I pressed for the nurse, and she came to my aid. We got him back in the bed, and she calmly talked to him and gave him a shot as slick as a whistle. He never knew what she did. She was wonderful. Nikki always checked in on him or me to make sure we didn't need anything. She exemplified nursing. My dad wanted to take her home with him. When he got to the skilled nursing facility, he wanted to know why he couldn't have "his nurse" he had at the other place. "I liked her, and she took good care of me."
