Heather critically thinks of ways to improve processes when other strategies aren't working.
Heather truly cares about her workforce members and goes above and beyond to demonstrate it daily. For example, if her staff is short-staffed - she will either stay over or come in to work and help fill the gaps in staffing. Heather always volunteers to assist with any initiatives to facilitate the ICARE values of Parkland Health. For example, Heather serves as the sponsor for Correctional Health’s UBC. The UBC membership had greatly declined during the pandemic and Heather stepped up without any directions from leadership to help revive the UBC membership presence. She actively serves as support to the chair of UBC and does whatever is necessary to support the chair such as create meeting flyers to notify the team to attend meetings.

In 2022, Heather experience the loss of one of her workforce members, Heather demonstrated such high compassionate care and empathy for her team. She communicated and escalated the passing of the employee appropriately and made contact with our spiritual care team. She coordinated a meeting with her staff to announce the passing and provided time for grieving and reminiscing.

Correctional Health had lost many SPARKS peer support members through turnover, and she saw a need to improve CH SPARKS peer support. She worked closely with our spiritual care team and invited our spiritual care liaison to the correctional health facility to meet the team. Further, she sent emails to promote workforce members to join and become part of the SPARKS peer support team for the department.

Heather critically thinks of ways to improve processes when other strategies aren't working. For example, during the 2023 ice storm - her area had minimal nursing staff available to support all patient care services. She recommended sending one of our providers to our intake areas so that patients are seen in real-time and relieve some of the pressure due to the critical staffing.

Heather continues to have high-performing workforce members including a recent Rose Award winner and currently has no vacancies or resignations in her tower. Heather is always a team player, supportive, trustworthy and collaborative. She is willing to support and implement any needs that are requested of her. Heather continues her professional development having completed her Bachelor of Science in Nursing and her CCHP (Certified Correctional Health Professional) certification both in 2022. Heather has stood extremely strong and calm in some of the most stressful situations. She is so deserving of this award, and I am proud to have the opportunity to nominate her.
