Heather Roush is a compassionate, kind, and conscientious nurse. I have observed her compassionate care on several occasions. An incident that most stands out is when Ms. Roush was caring for a man who could not have visitors due to the COVID-19 restrictions. Ms. Roush noticed that this man was becoming more and more withdrawn and discouraged due to not having visitors. She took the time to get to know this man and to learn about his family, his interests, and his story. Ms. Roush learned that this man was very active prior to his illness and enjoyed golfing. She also learned that he missed his fiancée and family. Ms. Roush reflected on what she could do to improve her patient's experience and ease his distress. She decided to purchase causal and tasteful clothing to allow him to be more comfortable. She and another associate took the time to assist the patient with bathing and dressing. They even arranged to change his catheter so he could wear loose-fitting pants. All of us privileged to witness the effect this had on this man saw how his mood improved by the gesture and by the opportunity to wear stylish and comfortable clothing. His energy lifted, he smiled and he expressed gratitude to Ms. Roush and the team.
This is one gesture that speaks of Ms. Roush's ability to care for her patients as a total person. Ms. Roush takes the time to get to know her patients beyond their admitting diagnosis. She offers her gentle, compassionate, and listening presence. I saw the difference it made for this patient and for many others. Ms. Roush is an excellent nurse whose care reflects the mission and vision of Bon Secours Mercy Health.
