The R&R Committee of our unit nominates Heather Rubio for the DAISY Award. She has been a nurse on 4P for four years and has grown to be a leader through her excellent clinical skills and commitment to excellence. She works diligently each day to provide the best patient care and to take the time to teach patients, especially in regard to discharges.

Since she works day shift, she routinely discharges patients; however she excels at difficulty discharges. Recently she had a patient who had multiple social issues in regards to discharge including inability to afford prescriptions, no transportation home and required extra teaching about her recent surgery/prescriptions. She not only contacted extra support services to assist with social issues but personally escorted the patient to the pharmacy to ensure that the patient made it in time (before the pharmacy closed), ensured that the patient understood all of the prescriptions and then made it safely to her cab ride home.

Heather often acts as a preceptor and is able to translate her clear communication skills and critical thinking to new nurses. Her clinical expertise provides an excellent example to her peers and she is a resource to all staff. She is very compassionate towards her patients and often goes the extra mile to make sure that the patient is comfortable and educated on the plan of care. Froedtert and 4P are very lucky to have her as she is a true example of an excellent nurse.
