Heather experienced the untimely death of a patient during her shift. Though probably needing to decompress herself, she stayed with the family allowing them time to mourn. The following evening, she tenderly bathed her patient, placed a fresh gown, and a prayer blanket. Family from out of state came to pay their last respects. Heather wholeheartedly shared their grief but stayed nearby - a familiar presence. The family entrusted Heather to take memorial fingerprints and locks of hair from their loved one. Heather's patient had further medical needs and needed to be moved to multiple facilities. Heather offered to be the contact person for the family. They were fearful of their loved one being lost in the healthcare shuffle. Heather notified them of movement between facilities - her patient's family was very grateful. Later, Heather took the time to write a sympathy letter and collect staff signatures for a sympathy card. Heather's selflessness and compassion were a privilege to experience. She is most deserving of the DAISY Award for her care of both, her patient and family during this difficult time.
