As a health care provider, often our eyes view our environment in a different way. When the patient is a family member that view can change dramatically. I am a nurse and never feel prouder of that, then when I see a colleague deliver skilled, compassionate care. Such is the case of this DAISY nominee. Heidi did not do one extraordinary thing but did everything extraordinary. My family member, a young man of 58 years, was admitted to Hillcrest in August of 2017. Due to his complicated medical condition, he was transferred to the Main Campus where he underwent surgery. His postoperative course was rocky, including extended time on ECMO and an IABP. Defying all odds, he survived this, only to suffer a devastating postoperative stroke. After an extended stay at the hospital, transfers back and forth from LTAC to intensive rehab centers he arrived back in our ICU at Hillcrest. His care that I witnessed was exceptional. But it was always a little bit better when Heidiwas there. The relationship forged between nurse and patient, brought him a much-needed refuge from the anxiety and fear these last few months have brought. He knew he would rest easy when this nurse was present. And with the assistance of the speaking valve, he voiced that over and over. From the little things, such as brushing his teeth "with real toothpaste", washing his face, to the big things, such as titrating medications, accompanying him to tests, teaching him to eat safely, all were done with the highest degree of respect for the integrity of the person. Knowing the patient my entire life, I knew the person that was lying in that bed, and I hoped that others could see beyond to the person he was and still is. And Heidi did just that, not only to him, but extending the care and compassion to the family. When his sister could not physically be present, Heidi included her in a report about any changes in condition, tests, etc. that brought peace to her and the entire extended family. Yes, as nurses, we are supposed to do that every day and most of us do, but Heidi went above and beyond to make this young man's stay just a little bit better than the best.
