Heidi Stearns, RN
Heidi started last year on the Medical Surgical unit and has made significant changes on this unit. I will begin to explain how Heidi has contributed to the pillars of success.
Shared Governance is the biggest impact that I see in Heidi's contributions. Heidi encourages others to be a part of the change that they want to see in health care. She doesn't tell people what to do in a situation; she encourages that person to be a part of the solution. This encourages the top of your license practices for all Nurses.
The biggest impact example I can give is the introduction of LPNs on the Medical Surgical unit. Heidi was instrumental in the process:
-Helping define the scope of practice components for an LPN on the unit.
-Welcoming the LPNs
-Encouraging all staff members to build trust with the new members of our team.
-Engaging in Progress meetings and the LPN residency "Share Meetings".
-Being available and present for questions and assisting everyone to think critically to get the answer.
-Always keeping calm and ready for situations that need her assistance.
-Troubleshooting with staff members to find the answer- not just telling them the answer.
-Coordinating all schedules to accommodate the required Education on this unit.
Building the infrastructure to increase job satisfaction is key to a successful organization. Heidi recognizes when staff are stressed and is the helping hand on the unit. Heidi is respectful and courteous to everyone.
Heidi has implemented the Unit Based Practice council on the Medical Surgical unit and has gathered a group of influential nurses to make some important changes on the unit.
The council is working on the introduction of locked Medication boxes in the patient rooms. The members of the council picked the style and place that the boxes will be located.
The council has also worked on the process for communication between Nurses and LNAs.
Personally, I find Heidi approachable, welcoming, and supportive. The collaboration of educational events is wonderful because Heidi values education and professional development.
