Misericordia University is proud to announce Heidi Stredny as the winner of the DAISY In Training Award. There were many wonderful comments from Heidi?s peers and instructors, but the following story is just ?one shining example? written by an instructor that demonstrates the compassion and commitment to nursing and her patients. Heidi was given an assignment with a patient who could not speak. It was amazing how she interacted with this patient; they found a way to communicate. The patient?s wife was very involved in her husband?s care and was particular with his needs. After meeting Heidi and witnessing the care that she provided her husband, the wife felt at ease knowing the student nurse would take exceptional care of her husband that evening. Throughout the day, the patient and Heidi wrote back and forth on a communication white board. Through this communication, Heidi took the time to get to truly know the patient. He shared with her pictures on his phone and listened to some of his favorite songs. By the end of the night, all the students were gathered around his bedside laughing and listening to music. At the end of the night, both the patient and Heidi said their goodbyes with tears in their eyes. This is just one of many examples of the care provide to every patient assignment Heidi was given.
