Heidi knew that her job does not end at the bedside but in every aspect of a patient's life. She could have made excuses and left the responsibility to the patient for the things the patient left behind, or for the prescriptions to drop off, or the soda he wanted but did not have the means to purchase, or the taxi ride home, but Heidi demonstrated true compassion and caring by taking care of these things. This story would have never come to the surface because Heidi did not seek the limelight or the credit for what she had done. It was only upon investigation when staff had heard what she had done that everything else came to fruition.
Heidi went way above and beyond what any job description states. She demonstrated what classrooms and lectures will never teach those who are entering the nursing profession. It is that natural instinct that is deep within a true nurse. Heidi has love, compassion, empathy, and caring.
