Helen gave me the power to believe in myself. She went above and beyond her job as a nurse. Helen brightened up the room when she came in.
I am 81 years old and I thought I was paralyzed. I couldn’t move, I am very active and my pain went through the roof. I lay still hour after hour. I was given morphine and still could not move. I felt life was over for me. I am a very good patient and follow orders very respectively. I had X-rays taken and a CAT scan, couldn’t move only screamed and cried. This, all of the above, and much more is not who I am. I met Helen, my nurse. She was compassionate, loving, and professional and took charge with decisions that should be made regarding my health, and gently lovingly guided me to the beginning of having my life back. I felt I would never get up and walk again. The pain was with me on a regular basis and I was soon so depressed, that the only one to give me strength and guidance was Helen. I believed her. She soothed me into a decision that made me feel alive again and gave me hope. Helen said, "I will tell you every move I make as I try to remove the pants and long johns from you". Step by step, Helen slowly removed the bunched-up material from my body, my bed. Step by step I listened and followed Helen as the last pieces were removed. Helen said "good job" every time we moved forward with the pants and long johns. Good job Helen said throughout my experience. Good job Helen said I am so proud of you as I was so excited emotionally mentally. I am a good patient, I listened to Helen and Helen listened to me. I am a good patient, I have the best nurse in the world because Helen was understanding, listened to the patient, listened to my fears and needs. The next day the two professionals from therapy came in to try and make me move. As I did Helen said good job. We are going slow as I sat up, and Helen held my hand, as I had help from 2 different therapy women. I heard Helen say hold my hand as I tried to stand up and hold the walker, good job, I heard, I am so proud of you. As the therapy woman said you can rest and do the walker tomorrow, as I did it. I held onto the walker, I stood up as I heard good job I am so proud of you. Helen is an asset to Jefferson Hospital. Helen gave me the power to believe in myself. Helen went above and beyond her job as a nurse. Helen brightened up the room when she came in. Helen made me believe in myself and now I am on the road to recovery. I believe I can work through my pain because of Helen. Helen listened to my cries out for help and acted on them. Helen took over and with Helen’s help, I am hopefully on the road to recovery. Helen took charge and refused to let me fail. Helen’s words "good job, I am proud of you", should reach everyone’s ears. Thank you my wonderful professional. I love who you are as a professional and a person.
