Helene Lawler took great care of her admitted OVED patients in the ER. She placed calls out to families in the middle of the night. In one instance Helene thought the one male patient might be speaking French but when she used the language line Helene noticed he seemed not to be able to hear. Helen placed a call to the daughter and when she spoke to the daughter she found out he was hard of hearing, with no hearing aids, they just spoke LOUDER and the language was Arabic. Making a big difference in his care knowing this! Communication is basic and essential!
The second situation was an elderly female who had pulled out her IV and then she was refusing to have it reinserted despite the need for IV antibiotics and fluids. Helene just tried reasoning with the patient to help her understand why we needed to proceed with this, but when that did not work Helene did not force the issue and decided to call her daughter who was very thankful and came in to give support.
Helene treats everyone like family and this shows in her care and support of patients while staying in the ER. The one patient's daughter ended up being a former director of nursing and I am sure she appreciated Helene's extra efforts. I know I do!
