Helene McKnight, RN
I am honored to recognize Helene because she exemplifies everything nursing should be: compassionate, skilled, attentive, and deeply human.
From March to May, I found myself facing one of the most difficult and frightening periods of my life. Following surgery, I developed complications that required me to undergo a series of endoscopic procedures and esophageal dilations every two weeks. Each appointment brought anxiety, uncertainty, and fear. As the procedures approached, I often found myself worried about what would happen next and wondering if I would ever get back to feeling like myself again.
Every single time I arrived at the endoscopy suite, Helene was there to greet me with a warm smile and a sense of humor that somehow always arrived exactly when I needed it most. Before she ever started an IV, checked a monitor, or reviewed my chart, she connected with me as a person. She had a remarkable ability to make me laugh even when I was scared. In those moments, she gave me something I desperately needed: a distraction from my fears and a reason to feel hopeful.
What made her care extraordinary was that she never treated me like just another patient coming through the department. She listened carefully to my concerns and remembered the details that mattered. She was meticulous in protecting my PICC line and ensuring it was handled appropriately. She advocated for my needs and even helped me identify important concerns to discuss with the anesthesia team before my procedures. She made me feel seen, heard, and safe.
As a nurse myself, I understand the demands of our profession and the impact we can have on patients. Helene embodies the very best of nursing. Her professionalism, attention to detail, advocacy, compassion, and ability to connect with patients are extraordinary. She did more than care for me; she inspired me, encouraged me, and helped me find hope during a very difficult journey.
Helene made a lasting difference in my journey, and I will always be grateful for the care, comfort, and humanity she brought to every encounter.
