The KCVA Oncology/Hematology clinic has an amazing group of LPNs who deserve facility-wide recognition. Amanda Brengle, Amanda Gideon, and Jessica Colvin are the “FAB 3” who, since joining our department, have brought deep connection, laughter, and joy to our patients. Their caring attitude has influenced the entire culture of our department. The LPNs greet patients by their names, ask about their families, and know the patients’ interests. They listen to the Veterans tell their stories, hold their hands, and give hugs freely. Laughter and smiles fill our hallways and infect other staff. I often hear this group say, “Our Veterans deserve everything.” In the spring of 2023, they stated they wanted to have a “tea party” for our Veterans, especially targeting our female Veterans who can feel isolated being treated with a predominantly male population. The group planned and organized a venue, invites, decorations, food, and games. They united the department with the event, enlisting the help and contributions of all the staff. We even had staff spouses cook and volunteer help! In April of 2023, we held our first Veterans appreciation event! We had a small turn out, but lots of laughs, good food, and games. The attendees and staff shared heartfelt stories about what the KCVA means to them. After the initial event, the FAB 3 decided they wanted to throw a BBQ party. Fast forward to recent times, the tea party and BBQ are annual events. Veteran attendance has grown exponentially, with 40 Veterans attending the September 5th BBQ! As a KCVA employee, the camaraderie witnessed between the Veterans, their families, and staff fill my heart with joy! These events would not have occurred without these wonderful nurses with hearts of gold. I am so grateful for their enthusiasm and willingness to go the extra mile for our Veterans. They truly embody the “I CARE” values daily.
