Henry was the infinite professional. He was kind, compassionate, considerate, empathetic, and thorough.
I was rushed to the hospital due to my lack of ability to speak clearly and effortlessly as well as weakness in my limbs. I was seen shortly by nurses and doctors, but I told them I could wait, there were more important things to deal with. Even with all the chaos I was still awarded a fair amount of great hospitality. The level of interest, respect, and hospitality is not unmatched compared to any other hospitals I have been to. I was rewarded and yes it was a reward and true honor to be in the presence of Henry.
Ironically, my stay was as if I was at an upscale hotel. He was so informative, tender, kind, and compassionate. I was stressed out with all that I had going on, but he kept me calm which helped my speech return quicker. I am writing this to let you that I had a wonderful experience. It was a pleasure and an honor to meet Henry and exchange pure and honest energies with him. He should be recognized in any way possible for his work of going over and beyond. That is a great human being right there, and I am happy to have had this traumatizing experience with him.
Mr. Fierro was the infinite professional. He was kind, compassionate, considerate, empathetic, and thorough. He took really good care of my daughter. He made us feel comfortable. He left a deep impression on her. We were fortunate to have him as a nurse, he was one of a kind. We could feel that he enjoys his job and loved being a nurse and serving his patients. He was truly a breath of fresh air.

Henry Fierro has played a significant role in the department, trained in both the Peds ED & Resuscitation areas. While his nursing expertise is demonstrated in the pediatric population, his skills with traumatic, medical, surgical, and psychiatric emergencies extend to patients of all ages from neonatal to geriatric. Henry has also participated in projects to improve the Emergency Department. He completed the Quality Academy Program, a professional development training program to plan and implement improvement projects. His process improvement project was to reduce radiology waiting time by 25%, and it was successful in June 2020. This improvement positively contributed to the ED’s cycle time metric, which is a quality metric used to measure and optimize clinical and patient experiences.
So, what makes Henry stand out that he should receive the DAISY Award for extraordinary nurses? It is the multiple written recognitions by his colleagues, patients, and patient families. The following are some descriptions submitted over the years from colleagues:
Henry shows kindness, excellent bedside manner and compassion; takes the time to do the extra thing that needs to be done without having to be told. He is very patient with the parents in the Peds ER and takes the time to explain procedures and gain their trust; takes the time every morning to stock the unit for dayshift. He seems very passionate about teaching patients and tries to answer all the questions the family has. He always has a smile; he is one of the most helpful, kind-hearted nurses. We love how he jumps in to help and volunteers to assist other nurses with routine procedures; he puts his heart in the care of his patients.
Obviously, he is role-modelling excellence, coworkers are noticing! Patients and patient families have also submitted their commendations. Henry is currently the ER’s July Kindness Rockstar. This was initiated by a Resus patient who observed that she was surrounded by patients needing much more emergent attention, like the patient in cardiac arrest or the patient who arrived with a gunshot wound. Despite the busyness and chaos, Henry went above and beyond for her.
One of his patients in the Peds ED wrote that she learned a lot about her body system, that he had explained everything in detail. She did not feel scared about her situation when she was talking to him and even wrote that if she was Henry’s daughter, she would be proud to call him her dad.
A patient family wrote that this was the third time their daughter was being cared for by Henry. They wrote that he is the type of nurse one will always remember, they always leave more educated on how to care for their children from him and were very grateful for his service. Henry’s dedication to his work and heart for his patients clearly exemplifies an extraordinary nurse.
