Our 94-year-old dad was admitted for CHF. He was in the hospital for two weeks and then went home under Hospice Care. When he was a patient in the hospital, Herald became one of his nurses. Every day that I came to visit Dad, I was so happy and relieved knowing that Herald was on duty.

Although he was a new nurse who had been fresh out of college for only two months, I could see a lot of great qualities in Herald. He was always so kind and patient towards Dad. Anything that we felt we needed or felt would make dad more comfortable he would get it for us. Herald's smile, nice haircut, and pleasant exchanges did not go unnoticed.

The night before Dad was to be discharged, Herald told Dad he would stop by to say goodbye before the end of his shift. And he did visit with us. He simply pulled up a chair next to Dad, and we just talked stories, getting to know Herald a little bit better. It also gave Dad a chance to say "Thank You" for the way in which Herald cared for him while he was here. Just that little act of kindness truly shows what kind of person and character Herald is.

I just completed a CNA Cohort of 25 students, several of whom just graduated from high school and are about to become nurses. I shared with them our experience with Herald and expressed how his little act of kindness made such an impact for good. I hope one day they, too, can be just as compassionate and kind as Herald was to us.
