This nurse's proactive approach not only positively impacts patient experience but also fosters a team culture focused on empathy and individualized care.
This nurse assists with general anesthesia patients in the dental OR who frequently have CP, autism, and anxiety about medical environments. Many of the patient's parents express fear of the operating room and how overwhelming the setting could be for the patients. Understanding the unique challenges that these patients face, this nurse takes the initiative to meet with the patient and family during consults before the procedure. She introduces herself in a calm and friendly manner and asks the patient/family what their hobbies are. She recognizes that these are opportunities to connect with the patient. This nurse's proactive approach not only positively impacts patient experience but also fosters a team culture focused on empathy and individualized care. The surgical team noted how her confident and empathetic techniques could be applied to other patients with special needs, leading to discussions about implementing more comprehensive training on communication strategies.
Her ability to bridge the gap between medical procedures and patient emotions not only improved patient outcomes but also enhanced the team’s understanding of how to provide exceptional care in challenging situations. This nurse's commitment to patient-centered care became a model for her colleagues, ultimately leading to a more compassionate environment for all patients in the ambulatory OR.
