Hidi Moody is a phenomenal nurse who continually goes above and beyond for her patients and other nurses on the unit. For this particular situation, it was a typical busy day in the PICU which started with multiple patient assignment changes and admissions. One of the admissions happened to be a 3-month-old patient who had a cardiac arrest and was not doing very well. Hidi volunteered to take the patient. Throughout the shift we continually coded this patient and performed a variety of procedures; during these times Hidi was performing her normal duties of being involved with the patient but she was also keeping the family involved and as up to date as possible during these critical times. Despite our best efforts the patient continued to decline, and the family decided to not advance care and allow the patient to pass naturally.
Towards the end of the shift, the mother wanted nothing more than to hold her infant while the baby was still with us and Hidi advocated for the mother and family to make this happen. She arranged the removal of any extra machines, devices, and lines that might interfere with the baby being held. Hidi collaborated with the PICU team and the mother was able to hold her baby until the baby passed on. Hidi then stayed a few hours after her shift had ended and after the family had gone home, to continue taking care of the baby and perform bereavement care. While facilitating end of life bereavement care, Hidi made sure with the help of the team nursing assistants, to obtain a mold of the baby's hand for a treasured remembrance for the family. After all, was said and done Hidi didn't leave the patient until the patient had to depart to his next destination. She continually goes above and beyond for her patients and other staff members on the unit; she is one of the beautiful souls in the PICU that make this unit so amazing.
