Hilda never stopped, never complained and you could even see her smile under her N95 mask.
Hilda has been a Registered Nurse on Six Monti since 2008 and during this time she has become an informal leader on the unit as the unit's charge nurse. In this role she continuously shows staff what it means to feel supported; whether she assists them with a difficult patient, helps a novice nurse learn a new skill, or managing high patient flow. She is the person you want at your side when times become challenging. Hilda has been invaluable in this role and works tirelessly to enable our staff to succeed.
Hilda's energetic personality and love for nursing are seen on a daily basis by her patients and co-workers. Hilda is able to adapt quickly to change to best fit the acuity needs of the unit. She very often cares for our transplant population and strives to make connections with every patient on the unit. She builds relationships with these patients and connects to them as well, having donated her own kidney to her brother several years ago.
Over the years our patients and Hilda have formed a bond that I have never quite seen before with a patient and a nurse. We tend to see a lot of readmissions on 6 Monti and they often ask for her by name. She builds unique bonds with her patients and has been known to check in on them if they are transferred off the unit to a higher level of care. For these patients, they feel a sense of calm knowing that she is there for them.
Hilda is a dedicated nurse, and nothing can stop her, not even a global pandemic, and being 6 months pregnant. She never stopped, never complained and you could even see her smile under her N95 mask. She remained calm and caring, always putting her patients first. She was a resource to patients and to staff, always encouraging them along the way. She always manages to keep things positive, no matter the circumstance. Simply put she is an extraordinary nurse.
