May 2026 Honoree
Holli Polk, MSN, RN, CCRN-CSC-CMC, NEA-BC, NPD-BC
Holli Polk exemplifies nursing leadership at its very best. A steadfast believer in lifelong learning, she leads with a simple yet powerful philosophy: every patient deserves the very best care—every time, no exceptions. As Director of the CVICU, Holli embraced this responsibility with a clear vision and unwavering commitment to excellence. When Holli stepped into her role, she did not begin with policies or metrics—she began with people. She personally met with every team member and asked three questions: What do you need? What gets in the way of doing your best work? How can I help remove those barriers?
By listening first and valuing every voice, Holli built a culture rooted in trust, compassion, and mutual respect. Holli believes that when nurses feel supported and valued, exceptional patient care follows. She models compassion and exemplary professional practice not only in the expectations she sets, but in how she cares for her team. Through recognition, celebrations, and even preparing breakfast for staff before shifts, Holli demonstrates servant leadership and genuine appreciation for those who care for patients every day. She also focused on building the right team—one grounded in collaboration, continuous learning, and shared purpose. By empowering staff to participate in selecting future colleagues, Holli fostered ownership, trust, and a deep sense of teamwork.
With a strong culture in place, Holli turned her attention to clinical outcomes. She openly shared data on hospital-acquired harm events and grounded improvement efforts in evidence-based practice, reinforcing her belief that even one harm event is one too many. Nurses were empowered to lead small tests of change, identify barriers, and help shape safer practices. The impact was extraordinary. Harm events decreased from more than twenty in 2024 to just two in 2025, with zero hospital-acquired harm events during the first six months of the year—a remarkable achievement driven by a culture of accountability, collaboration, and shared purpose.
Beyond outcomes, Holli mentors nurses at every stage of their careers, encouraging professional development, ethical practice, and confidence in their leadership potential. These accomplishments are even more remarkable given the personal challenges she faced during this time. When her mother came to visit, Holli instinctively recognized something was wrong and ensured she received care that led to a cancer diagnosis. Throughout months of treatment, Holli remained her mother’s strongest advocate while continuing to lead her team with compassion and strength. Holli Polk’s leadership has created safer patients, stronger nurses, and a culture where compassion and excellence define the standard of care. For the profound impact she has had on both patients and caregivers, she is truly deserving of the DAISY Nurse Leader Award.
