Hollie Eykyn, Registered Nurse
Hollie… what can I say other than you provided an incredibly comforting presence not only to my mother, but also to me and my sister during Mum’s stay on ward 20, area 3.
Mum was extremely poorly and required intense treatment, and you were always there, even in the busiest of times, to talk to us, explain what the doctors had said, and provide us with all the updates we needed. If there was anything we needed to know, you would talk to the doctors straight away and come back to us with answers. We never had to look for a nurse to talk to when you were on duty; you were always there, always available. As a relative of a very sick patient, we could not have asked for more – you were her advocate and our angel.
As a newly qualified nurse, I watched you listen and learn from your peers, and we always felt that Mum was in the safest of hands when you were looking after her. This is an amazing achievement, especially as you are so newly qualified. You listened to Mum and you learnt from Mum – she shared her experiences with you, and you listened.
Mum loved your sense of humour and beautiful smile and felt safe in your kind hands. What more could an elderly patient want? You truly cared for her and kept her spirits up during the difficult times, and you can be very proud of what that means to an elderly person and to us as relatives. Mum’s future is very uncertain, but you helped her to achieve her goal of going home and living independently.
Hollie, you have a fantastic career ahead of you. In those dark, stressful moments on a busy ward or difficult shift, never lose sight of the incredible difference you are making to patients and their relatives. Thank you for choosing to be a nurse!
