Day in and day out, Holly is a fierce advocate for our psychiatric patients, many of whom arrive frightened, guarded, and resistant to care.
There are moments in leadership where you are reminded why nursing is not just a profession, but a calling. One of those moments happened while I was rounding in the Emergency Department. An elderly patient had attempted to get up to use the restroom and suffered an accident. He was visibly embarrassed and vulnerable, trying to disappear into himself. As a non-clinical leader, I wanted to help more than anything, but I felt helpless in that moment, unsure of what to do or how to do it the right way. That is when Holly Hall appeared—not because she was asked, not because someone called her, but because she noticed. Without a single word of judgment or hesitation, Holly stepped in. She gently washed the patient, placed him in clean gowns, changed the linens, and restored the room with quiet grace. She never rushed him. She never made him feel like a burden. She never treated the situation as a task. She treated him like a human being.

Later, the patient shared how deeply grateful he was for Holly, saying she treated him “like a human being” during one of the most humiliating moments of his life. That sentence has stayed with me. It captured everything about who Holly is and why her care matters so deeply. What makes this moment even more powerful is that it is not unique to Holly—it is her standard. Day in and day out, Holly is a fierce advocate for our psychiatric patients, many of whom arrive frightened, guarded, and resistant to care. I have witnessed her do what cannot be taught in a textbook—build trust. Patients who refuse medications will accept them from Holly. Patients who feel unheard will open up to her. She listens. She explains. She advocates. And in doing so, she gives patients back a sense of control and dignity when they feel they have lost both. Holly brings calm into chaos. She brings dignity into vulnerability. And she brings humanity into every interaction, no matter how difficult or emotionally heavy the situation may be. Watching Holly care for patients has changed the way I view nursing—not just as clinical excellence, but as an act of profound compassion and respect. Holly Hall does not simply provide exceptional nursing care. She restores dignity, builds trust, and reminds patients that they matter—especially when they feel at their lowest. She is everything the DAISY Award represents and more.
