When our 23-year-old loved one was hit head-on by a drunk driver, our family's world changed instantly. He suffered a severe traumatic brain injury along with devastating injuries that left almost every bone in his body broken. He was placed in the SICU, intubated, and in a coma for months. During the darkest and most traumatic period of our lives, one nurse became far more than just a nurse; she became a source of comfort, strength, advocacy, and humanity for our entire family. 

From the moment she began caring for him, Hope treated him as a person, not just a patient. One of the most meaningful acts of compassion we witnessed was the extraordinary care she took to restore his dignity after the accident. Over the course of several days, she patiently spent hours removing blood, glass, and severe matting from his hair and body. In a moment when everything felt horrifying and unreal, her compassion restored a sense of dignity and humanity to him that we desperately needed. 

Hope consistently went above and beyond, willingly taking on additional responsibilities so she could continue caring for him. Knowing she was with him gave our family the ability to finally leave the hospital for short periods, get rest, and take care of ourselves because we knew he was safe in her hands. Even while encouraging us to care for ourselves, she always made time to sit with us, listen as we cried, answer questions, and comfort us when we felt lost. 

What made her care even more extraordinary was the personal experience she shared with us and used to guide and support our family with incredible empathy. She helped us think through difficult decisions, explained things honestly and compassionately, and made us feel less alone in an experience no family is ever prepared for. She frequently sat with his 16-year-old sister, who felt like she had just lost her big brother, and his mom and dad, who lived every moment unsure if their son would be able to make it through the night due to the extent of his injuries. In those moments of fear and helplessness, she provided stability, compassion, and a calm presence when we had none.

We witnessed how she spoke to him even while he was in a coma. She explained treatments and devices to him, talked to him like he was awake, and spent her time sitting with him so he would never feel alone. She also took extra time to explain every machine, treatment, and procedure to our family in ways that calmed our fears and helped us understand what was happening.

Hope wanted to know our loved one as a person. She listened as we told stories about him, learned who he was before the accident, and made sure the care she gave reflected that. In the middle of unimaginable trauma, she preserved his dignity and reminded us all of his humanity. 

Some nurses do their jobs well; others leave a permanent impact on the lives of the families they care for. Hope carried our family through the worst time of our lives with compassion, dedication, selflessness, and love. We will never forget what she did for our loved one and for all of us.
