The PCU had a very young patient who had a very complex diagnosis. She was afraid and overwhelmed. SPC Leabo was one of the few nurses who was able to get her to open up.
SPC Leabo always leaves a lasting impression on her patients. She never wants any recognition and always seems surprised whenever her patients write comments about the care that she provides. Most recently the PCU had a very young patient who had a very complex diagnosis. She was afraid and overwhelmed. SPC Leabo was one of the few nurses who was able to get her to open up. When she was finally discharged, she made a point to come back to the unit and left a card for SPC Leabo. I asked SPC Leabo if she would share the card with me and she obliged. The card read: I couldn't leave without telling you how much your care and comfort meant to me. In a place that was unfamiliar and scary, you made me feel like I had a friend. Thank you for making me laugh when I was so overwhelmed and showing the human side of healthcare. You were one of the nurses that I actually looked forward to seeing! You are a blessing and any patient is lucky to have you!

This was no surprise to me because she receives feedback like this often. But the thing that really stuck out to me was when the patient stated "showing the human side of healthcare". It's important that our patients know that we view them as human beings and that we are human as well. SPC Leabo was able to provide excellent care and make a human connection with her patient which I'm certain contributed to her positive outcome.
