Hunter Knight, BSN, RN
I am honored to recognize Hunter Knight, RN, for the exceptional clinical judgment, patient advocacy, and compassionate care he demonstrated during a recent patient event.
Hunter cared for a patient who had been admitted with complaints of dizziness. The patient had already been evaluated by the Electrophysiology team, who had signed off, and the hospitalist's plan was to discharge the patient the morning Hunter assumed her care.
However, Hunter recognized that something was not right.
He observed that the patient continued to experience intermittent atrial fibrillation with rapid ventricular response, along with small cardiac pauses. More importantly, he identified that the patient's complaints of dizziness corresponded directly with these rhythm changes and pauses, recognizing that she remained highly symptomatic and was not stable for discharge.
Hunter acted immediately by notifying the physician and clearly communicating his concerns. He advocated that the patient should not be discharged, explaining that her symptoms were ongoing despite the original treatment plan. The physician was unaware that the patient continued to experience these episodes, and Hunter strongly recommended that Electrophysiology be re-consulted.
As the day progressed, the patient's pauses became increasingly frequent, with some lasting up to five seconds. When the Electrophysiology team returned, Hunter provided critical information regarding both the patient's symptoms and the rhythm disturbances he had observed. His thorough assessment helped the team recognize the severity of the situation and determine that the patient required a permanent pacemaker, which was scheduled for the following morning.
Hunter's vigilance did not end there.
Recognizing the patient's potential for rapid deterioration, he proactively placed external pacing pads in preparation for the possibility that the pauses could worsen and emergency intervention might become necessary.
His foresight proved lifesaving. The patient subsequently experienced a nine-second pause, prompting a Rapid Response Team activation and emergent transfer to the Electrophysiology Lab, where a pacemaker was implanted that same day.
Had this patient been discharged home as originally planned, she could have experienced one of these prolonged pauses outside the hospital, with potentially catastrophic or even fatal consequences.
Hunter's ability to recognize subtle but significant changes in his patient's condition, correlate her symptoms with the cardiac rhythm disturbances, and persistently advocate for additional evaluation directly changed the course of her care and very likely saved her life.
His exceptional assessment skills, critical thinking, clinical expertise, and unwavering commitment to patient safety exemplify the very best of nursing. Hunter's actions reflect the compassion, advocacy, and excellence that the DAISY Award was created to recognize, making him truly deserving of this honor.
