Hunter has always given us realistic expectations every step of the way while also allowing us to hold on to our hope that anything is possible.
Baby G was born without a heartbeat or breathing. The medical team worked on her, and after 14 minutes she was resuscitated and transferred to UNC-Chapel Hill for a three-day cooling procedure. G was diagnosed with an extremely severe case of HIE. During G's time in the UNC Chapel Hill NICU, Hunter has been a stellar player on her care team.
Hunter has always given us realistic expectations every step of the way while also allowing us to hold on to our hope that anything is possible. One night in particular, all hope appeared to be lost and we did not know if G would make it past 24 hours. She was on full life support and her organs were shutting down. That night, Hunter endured with our family, allowed us to rest, and no matter how many times we called or asked questions, he was always reassuring, attentive and acted with so much compassion and empathy while still taking care of G.
Not only did Hunter care for G in the most extraordinary way, but he also reminded our family to take care of ourselves during this situation. It gave us so much comfort and peace to know that G was in good hands. Hunter has also gone over and beyond throughout this journey. Here's another example.
We had weekly calls with the medical team. Even on his days off, he's joined to be part of the call and advocate for G. This is beyond extraordinary and lets us know that he didn't just consider G as another baby, but that he treats all NICU babies with care and consideration as if they were his own family. We are excited to share that Baby G is doing so much better. Even with the uncertain road ahead, one thing that we are certain of is that Hunter will always be a part of the story we tell as we share G's journey. Hunter is an extraordinary individual, caretaker, and advocate for many.
