She was incredibly patient and caring. She was gentle and always checking in on me.
I was in the recovery room after prostate cancer surgery at Wesley Long Hospital. Hyang was the first person I saw afterward. She was incredibly patient and caring. She was gentle and always checking in on me. There was a big room with other patients and nurses. This is not meant to belittle the efforts of the other nurses, but Hyang was all over the place doing what needed to be done. I sensed an accent and asked if she was Korean. I know only two words in Korean for thank you, and I don’t remember what the other means (phonetically, it’s ahn-yo-hah-say-oh). My mind is a little scattered as I write this as it's eight days after surgery, and sleep some evenings has been harder than others. I wound up staying in recovery for about four hours. I felt no pain and truly enjoyed my time with X. She shared that she has been doing this for over 25 years, and if I remember correctly, all of those years have been at Cone. She spoke of some upcoming medical or, specifically, surgical work she was having coming up. Never did she complain that she was in pain or doing the work of five people or maintaining a gentleness that helped me feel safe. After 25 years as a school counselor and, before that, years in publishing and sports, you spot the hall of famers, as I refer to them. The people that are on a different level of expertise and skills than us mortals. Hyang is a true hall of famer. She has made her mark on me forever. Thanks for allowing me to share.
