Throughout our daughter's recovery, Ian's unwavering support and transparent communication became a source of hope in our journey. His positivity was a constant amidst the daily highs and lows, his honesty a guiding light through the uncertainty.
The journey with our daughter began with an urgent c-section at Vassar Hospital after doctors determined that her oxygen levels would not tolerate a natural birth. Immediately, she was whisked to WMC Maria Fareri Children's Hospital due to suspicions of a heart condition. Once the team at WMC had evaluated her case, the diagnosis of COA (coarctation of the aorta) was followed by open chest surgery just five days after her arrival, a critical juncture in her newborn life. Upon her arrival at WMC, she stayed in the NICU. While she was in the NICU, we were not able to hold her and had limited access to her. Once the surgery was scheduled, we were told that we would be transferring to the PICU. The NICU nurses assured us that we were in the BEST hands as we had been assigned to Ian Greaves.
Transitioning from the NICU to the PICU, where the weight of impending surgery loomed, we found comfort and support in the compassionate care of Ian Greaves. His presence and words were a source of confidence to our anxious hearts. Once she got situated in the PICU, the first thing he asked us was if we wanted to hold her. I remember I immediately started crying because I had longed to hold her from the moment she was taken from me after birth. We didn't think we would be able to hold her before surgery because of everything she was hooked up to and how fragile she was. I'll never forget him saying, "Of course, you can hold her, she's going into surgery tomorrow. It's the best thing for her. It's the best thing for both of you." The simple gesture of allowing us to hold our daughter before her surgery spoke volumes, easing our fears with his reassuring words.
Throughout our daughter's recovery, Ian's unwavering support and transparent communication became a source of hope in our journey. His positivity was a constant amidst the daily highs and lows, his honesty a guiding light through the uncertainty. Each day, as he entered her room, we found renewed strength and confidence in his care. After 21 days, we joyously brought our "Boss Baby" home - a nickname Ian gave her because even as young as she was, she sure was calling all the shots already. Her remarkable recovery was a testament to the exceptional care she received under Ian's watchful eye. Even now, over a year later, his name remains a cherished memory in our family's story. His empathy, a rare gem in an industry often fraught with burnout and fatigue, left a permanent mark on our hearts. Ian Greaves epitomizes the dedication and compassion deserving of the DAISY Award. His impact extends far beyond the confines of the hospital room, reaching into the depths of our gratitude and beyond. Though we hope never to tread the same path again, Ian's presence and friendship during that time are greatly missed, a testament to his profound influence on our lives and the lives of countless others.
