In January 2023 Charissa, RN took care of a patient in the ICU who had suffered a life-altering motor vehicle accident in August 2022 leaving her a quadriplegic with a trach ventilator and peg tube. In the few months after her injury, the patient suffered multiple stage 4 decubitus ulcers. Upon arrival to the ICU, the patient’s behavior was very difficult, to the point where many staff requested to have her for only one shift at a time. One shift, Charissa had spent a lot of time with this patient, taking time to really get to know her. Through their conversations that day Charissa learned about the patient’s life story, her family, and how her whole world changed in a matter of months. She discovered the patient’s kids lived in Wrightwood, so they could not visit often, which was difficult for the patient. She shared with Charissa that she couldn’t recall the last time she had been outside. Later that day, the patient told Tyler, CN that the last time she felt the sun hit her face was when she was being transported from the ambulance into the ER. The patient was understandably very emotional, and Charissa was there to provide support for the patient. Charissa wanted to take the patient outside to help lift her patient’s spirits. Charissa went to Tyler, who was charge nurse that day, and asked how we could make this happen. Together, they brought up the idea of taking the patient outside up during rounds and discussed the situation with Dr. Ngab, Intensivist, who gave his blessing and agreed it would be great if we could facilitate this. The patient was ventilated through her tracheostomy, she had multiple IV drips and required staying in her ICU bed. So moving the patient outside was going to be challenging. Cristofer was the RT on shift this day. He had trialed the patient off the ventilator that morning to make the transport outside easier. Cristofer was so compassionate and kind. He spent a large amount of the time with the patient that day. After coming up with a plan, Charissa, Cristofer, and Tyler took the patient in her bed outside to the front of the hospital. The patient was so emotional, she instantly started crying, making all of the team tear up as well. The patient stated, “This is the nicest thing anyone has ever done for me.” The team had planned on playing some music outside for the patient, but once outside, the patient began stating “Listen to the birds… I can hear the wind blowing in the trees… Oh wow, I haven’t seen cars driving in a while.” The team decided not to play any music because the sounds of the outside world, which we take for granted, were music enough for her. The patient was transported back to the unit where she continued to express her gratitude stating, “I can’t believe you did this for me.” Upon return to the unit, the patient’s spirits were lifted. She began talking to Charissa about her future plans. Her attitude was more optimistic about her future. It was as if being outside sparked a little fire for her to continue her life. It took a team effort to transport the patient outside and allow her to experience the sun hitting her face and the sound of nature. The team truly connected with the patient and went above and beyond for her.
