Lacey- On day 3 of his hospital stay, an angel named Lacey was assigned to take care of our father. We (his 6 children) all traveled to Oregon from MN where L lives. We were tired, emotional, stressed, and exhausted. We still didn't know with certainty everything that was going on with our father (and one of us was an RN and NP). Lacey immediately explained everything she was doing, what medications were infusing, the plan for the day, and what we needed to see happen to get him off of the ventilator. She made sure we were present for rounds. She was attentive to our father's need even though he was sedated. We were thrilled to have Lacey back for two days once he was off of sedation - she was so supportive when my dad was anxious, sat and listened to his stories, made sure he was clean, ordered food, etc. Never seemed rushed. She truly made a difference to not only our father, but our family as well.

As for Kyle, my dad loved him - he was patient and kind and brought humor into sometimes embarrassing situations (such as a bedpan) to make my dad feel comfortable. The 2nd thing my dad said after he was extubated as that he wanted his beard shaved - Kyle was there to take care of it. When my dad saw Kyle's name on the board, he would say, "I like that guy - I am so happy he is going to be helping me today.

Elle (RN) - Elle was my dad's nurse on probably two of our hardest days emotionally - when we tried sedation vacations to extubate and failed. Even though only one of us could be in the room (it was before 10am), when she saw how anxious our father was and how hard it was on my sister in the room, she allowed a second family member to come in. She gave us (the family) emotional support after the traumatic experience. She was clear, thoughtful and creative with a plan for the next day to trial another sedation vacation and extubating (she advocated for Ativan and for two of us to be present). On the day we finally extubated, it went well. I am thankful she listened to the concerns of my sister and I and helped come up with a plan for the following day. Once my dad was awake, Elle was only assigned his nurse one time and was obviously delightful, but she also made a point of stopping in all the other days she was there (when she wasn't assigned to him).

We truly thank all his wonderful nurses during our time – Lacey, Elle, Joe (awesome charge nurse), Kimberly, Isabelle, Erin, Tanja, and CNAs – Kyle, Karen, and Kayla
