Because of the wonderful care my mother received in the ICU, I would like to nominate the whole team of doctors and nurses for a DAISY Award. Here are a few examples of how they went above and beyond the basics to give compassionate care:
•    A snowstorm kept me from being present when my mom came out of emergency surgery. I arrived to find that a nurse had beautifully braided her hair “because it was getting matted on her pillow.”
•    Following emergency surgery, my mom was incoherent and septic. The nurses were patient and caring when answering all of my questions.
•    They were kind and informative regarding my questions about specific meds as we discussed possible comfort care.
•    They empowered me to be a great advocate for my mother’s needs while in the ICU.
•    They listened and asked for input; they were also very knowledgeable.
•    They took the time to explain how something needed to be changed, as considering the patient’s viewpoint.
•    During end-of-life care, one nurse even took the time to explain local areas for hiking when I expressed an interest but am new to the area. Time is a valuable resource, and he shared it generously.
Thank you, ICU Team, for providing the exact care I desired for my mom during this challenging, emotional time.

Thank you for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
