My Daughter's time at LAMC was a rollercoaster and a storm of emotions. Through that storm, we met an amazing team of nurses who helped us.
I would like the honor of recognizing the ICU/Neuro ICU Team led by Melissa Perez, Jasmine Belmonte, Esther Batac, and Felitzia (Zia) Mueller-Byrd and the entire ICU/Neuro ICU team at Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles Medical Center for the DAISY Team Award. In July 2022, my 19-year-old daughter was admitted to LAMC with an unknown illness.  We were transferred from the hospital in our town to LAMC. Our hospital in Bakersfield was not equipped to provide the level of care that my child needed. Arriving at LAMC was extremely scary because it was a new place, our child was gravely ill, and we didn't know what to expect. Her time at LAMC was a rollercoaster and a storm of emotions.  Through that storm, we met an amazing team of nurses who helped us.

Melissa is a night-shift ICU nurse at LAMC.  My daughter's stay at LAMC was full of ups and downs, and through it all, Melissa provided such wonderful care. Melissa helped put a smile on my daughter's face, as well as mine, through all the tears and uncertainties of my daughter's illness.  My daughter received a devastating diagnosis of Neuromyelitis Optica (NMO), an extremely rare neuroimmune disorder. It was such a scary time in our lives, and the compassionate and selfless care Melissa gave to my daughter was unmatched.

My daughter celebrated her 20th birthday in the ICU.  Melissa knew my daughter loved Stitch and made sure to get her a special birthday Stitch to brighten her day. The amazing thing about all of this is that my daughter's memory was affected by the NMO, and she does not remember most of her hospitalization.  She remembers Melissa. It's been about a year and a half since her hospitalization, and we still keep in touch with Melissa. I randomly tell her thank you so that she knows how much we appreciate the care she gave in our time of need. Still, it just doesn't seem like enough. I remember wandering the hospital in a haze and seeing banners for The DAISY Award but never looking into it.  I will forever be grateful for Melissa, her dedication to patients, compassion and overall personality will always hold a place near and dear to me.  Please consider this angel of nurse for your award.

In July of 2022, I was diagnosed with Neuromyelitis Optica and spent time in the ICU at Kaiser. I have had a lot of memory loss from that time, but what I do remember is that Melissa treated my family and me with the most amazing and beyond-loving care during our time of need. She went above and beyond to make my family and me comfortable and safe, which I will never forget. I hope that if I am ever put in the position where I have to be in the ICU again, I will have someone as amazing as Melissa.

Jasmine Belmonte is a nurse manager of the ICU (neuro side), while my daughter was a patient.  Jasmine's kind bedside manner, compassion, and willingness to go above and beyond for my daughter and myself was extraordinary. Jasmine coordinated a birthday celebration for my daughter while in the ICU. She and her staff decorated, bought in balloons, and all signed a card for my daughter's 20th birthday.  Such a small gesture made my mom heart burst.  I know that, as a nurse manager, Jasmine was probably extremely busy, but she always took the time to stop in and check on my child's progress and make sure my family was taken care of.  I will forever be grateful for the gracious care Jasmine provided for my child. The world could use a lot more care providers like her.  Please consider Jasmine for The DAISY Award.

Both Esther and Zia provided care that went above and beyond.  Esther's cheerful personality always put a smile on my daughter's face, and I will never forget that. Zia brought a special brush and products for curly hair because she wanted my daughter's curls taken care of.  These very small gestures made an immense impact.  I cannot express fully how much I appreciate the care these nurses provided for my daughter; there isn't enough thanks to be given.  We work in a thankless field where we are reminded of the negative things. I want these nurses to know that their service matters and has forever made an impact on my life, as well as my daughter's.  So please consider these amazing, compassionate, and excellent nurses for The DAISY Award.
