February 2011 Honoree
illa jane owens, RN
A patient Janie was following received a new medicine Efferent. This medicine is contraindicated on patient’s going to the OR. Patients should not receive this medicine within 7 days of going to the OR. This patient was scheduled for the OR the next day. Janie alerted the Surgeon/Cardiologist and provided literature. The surgery was postponed.
From Cara Dallmann “Janie’s actions averted a huge risk to this patient. I am very appreciative of her attention and actions. If the patient would have had surgery as scheduled we would have been at high risk for post-operative bleeding.”
Janie’s critical thinking and decision making averted a risk for this patient. This also shows the importance of advocating for the patient.
